James Alexander Gray Papers, 1916-1974

James Alexander Gray (1889-1952) was abusinessman and philanthropist of Winston-Salem, N.C. After graduating from theUniversity of North Carolina in 1908, he served in various capacities with theWachovia National Bank and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, eventually becoming ahigh-level executive. He was also a member of the North Carolina Senate for twoterms, 1917-1920. The collection contains correspondence, photographs,speeches, a scrapbook, and printed items relating to James Alexander Gray. Manyitems concern the endowment fund Gray established for the benefit of eleven NorthCarolina colleges and universities, but there are also materials relating to Gray'sprofessional and legislative activities and to the Gray family, including some aboutR.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company president and chair Bowman Gray.
